Hossegor is one of Europe’s best-known surf destinations, and most visitors ask the same question before they arrive: where do I get a board? Bringing your own means fees, board bags and a car full of foam. Getting one delivered works, but you still have to store it, carry it to the beach and wait for pick-up. There’s a simpler way: stay a few steps from the waves, rent on the beach, and leave the gear there at night. This page explains how surf rental works around Hossegor and how to do it from Le Shaka, our studios in Seignosse Le Penon.

How surf rental works around Hossegor

Between Capbreton, Hossegor and Seignosse, you’ll find three ways to rent surf gear:
  • Surf shops in town. A wide choice of boards, but you’ll need to carry your board to the beach and back every day.
  • Delivery services. Boards and wetsuits dropped at your accommodation. Convenient if you’re staying inland, as long as you have room to store the gear.
  • Surf school rental huts on the beach. You pick the board while looking at the waves, swap it when conditions change and walk straight into the water.
If you’re staying near the beach, the third option removes almost all the logistics. That’s the setup we recommend to our guests.

Which board and wetsuit should you rent?

Beginners: start on a foam board

Foam boards are stable, forgiving and safer when you fall. They’re the right choice if you’re learning or haven’t surfed for a while. If you’ve never surfed before, consider a lesson before renting on your own: Seignosse Surf School also runs lessons for children, teens, adults, families and private sessions.

Intermediate and advanced surfers: go for a performance board

If you can already take off and ride along the wave, a resin board will give you more speed and control. Since you can switch boards during your rental, you can adapt to the swell rather than being stuck with one shape for the whole week.

Wetsuit: full suit or shorty?

Both are available. Ask the team at the hut which one suits the day’s water temperature; it changes over the season.

Why Le Penon makes surf rental easier

Most of the hassle of a surf trip isn’t the surfing, it’s the logistics: parking near the beach, carrying a 9-foot board, finding somewhere to dry a wetsuit. Staying in Seignosse Le Penon cuts most of that out.
  • Everything on foot. Le Shaka is close to the beach, the water park, restaurants and shops, so you can leave the car parked for the week.
  • Rent and store at the beach. Pick up your board at the hut in the morning, leave it in storage at night. Nothing to squeeze into your studio.
  • Hossegor next door. Hossegor is 5 km away, Capbreton 9 km and Biarritz 36 km, if you want to explore other spots or go out in the evening.
